Donkeys

STOCK NOW AVAILABLE FOR SALE – contact us for more info.

We breed English-Irish donkeys and Australian donkeys which make wonderful pets and companion animals. All of our donkey stock are small and some fall within the official miniature sizing, although we register them only as standards. The English-Irish stock are very fluffy and are stockier than their Australian counterparts. The Australian stock tends to have shorter hair and are of a sturdier disposition, which is helpful if you intend to ride your new donkey.

Donkeys are simply wonderful animals – they are loyal and mine follow me all around the farm, taking every opportunity to spend time with me whenever Iʼm outdoors. They are gentle enough to tolerate my young son pulling on their ears, they will happily eat weeds and brush which horses and other flocks will take no interest in, and they are very good herd protectors against foxes and wild dogs which makes them great companion animals for sheep and goats and even cattle in calving season.

Did you know that a male donkey is called a “jack” and a female donkey is called a “jenny”? And that miniature donkeys must be no taller than 36″?

The normal gestation period of a donkey is around 1 year, so we have limited stock for sale each year as pets and herd protectors. If there’s something in particular you’re looking for feel free to be in contact and we’ll try to accommodate your needs. In particular if you are looking for a colt to keep as a breeding jack we need to know early to identify appropriate stock for your consideration, otherwise we usually geld the boys before selling them as pets.

Our herd is registered with the Affiliated Donkey Society of Australia and we are members of the Victorian Donkey Society chapter. Membership of your state based society is highly recommended so you’ll have access to a community of fellow long-ear lovers and the wealth of knowledge that they share.

If you are interested in establishing your own herd, we’d be happy to offer advice and tips and can put together an appropriate foundation herd for you from compatible stock. Feel free to call and have a chat if this is of interest.

FOR SALE

Our latest arrivals continue to impress and I am so proud of my jennies for producing such a bumper crop of friendly, sunny and well conformed foals. I will update this page and our new facebook page as they are becoming available, with deposits being accepted on foals not yet weaned. In the mean time if there’s something in particular you’re looking for, please contact me.

PLEASE NOTE: We will not sell single donkeys unless they are going to a home where there is already another long eared friend. Donkeys do not cope well on their own, they simply are very social animals and while they get along with other species, we find they are much, MUCH happier and healthier in the company of another donk. Further, the research shows that donkeys tend to bond in pairs – forming lifelong relationships with their buddies. Even within the herd they will pair off – unlike horses, who are herd animals and happiest when they are (any) part of a herd.

IMPORTANTLY!! if you live on a small acreage and have only one donkey it will most likely spend all of its day braying or calling out trying to find another donkey friend. This can be VERY loud and usually results in complaints from your neighbours and in some cases results in disputes that lead to the donkey needing to be re-homed. This is a situation we try to avoid at all costs.

Looking for something in particular? We continue to have foals arriving all the year round, if you let me know what you’re after I can notify you once that colour or line arrives on the ground…

Viewing of stock for sale is by arrangement only. We are located near Berrima in the NSW Southern Highlands. If you are unable to collect your long ears yourself, we can recommend a number of reputable transporters who have delivered our donkeys right across Australia – from Darwin to Queensland to Tasmania.

Please feel free to contact us with any other questions you may have.

NOTE: We have some more new arrivals due soon that will be added to this list once vet checks have been completed.

If you would like more information, or to arrange a time to come and meet our donkeys, please contact me.
